Organizations worldwide spend enormous amounts of time and money to develop leaders, yet their programs don’t produce the desired results. What are they missing?
Watch Digging Deeper this week as Dennis talks about mindset being the foundation for how leaders think, learn, and behave. We’d love to hear your thoughts. Please share with us in the comments below.

Dennis Engelbrecht says:
“the established set of attitudes held by somebody” is the official definition and I think that describes it well. So, it boils down to one’s attitudes. As it relates to our industry in general, success in construction requires a “can do” attitude and a “collaborative” mindset. Negativity can bring down those around you and threaten to destroy your culture. Whether it is in the office or on a job site, the difference between “can do” and negativity is a big swing factor.
As to collaboration, I think the industry as currently constructed requires collaboration for success. We are losing a large number of experienced “master builders” and replacing them with less skilled and experienced people, part of the baby boomer generation aging out. At the same time, the jobs are not fully designed and the details are often worked out via the submittal process. Via collaboration, the knowledge of all parties can be brought to bear on any problem or decision to produce a great result. On the other hand, someone who thinks they “know it all” or are hung up on power, don’t get the necessary collaboration to produce consistent success. Collaboration requires not only a collaborative mindset, but also the skills of listening, conducting productive meetings and synthesizing different ideas to gain consensus on the ultimate best solution.
Hope this helps!
Dennis

Hi Dennis,
I would love to hear more about how you define mindset. Mindset is a word that has been thrown around a lot in probably the last decade. I am still not sure what it actually means. I would love to hear a better explanation particularly as it applies to our industry.
Thank you!!!!
