We all need to build a great team to be successful. However, building winning and resilient teams is much more than finding a group of people with a certain mix of technical skills.
Watch our blog this week as Wayne talks about the importance of building great teams that LAST and leaves you with a thought provoking question – what can you do to make sure that the team you have worked so hard to build stays with you?
We look forward to hearing what you are doing to nurture and retain your talented teams. Please share your thoughts with us in comments below.
Only one week to go before we begin the new cohort FBI’s Contractor Business Boot Camp! This is your chance to begin grooming your high potential future leaders. Please get in touch with Charlotte at ckopp@familybusinessinstitute.com to learn more about the program.
Danny Tezak says:
I am not sure there is a “magic elixir” Wayne, but I believe all successful business owners share your concerns. All “A Players”, whether in business or in sports are MOTIVATED and want to do great things. Like you,I often struggle to understand WHY people follow my lead and WANT to work in our business. We are constantly evaluating what can we do better to continue to attract and retain our key people. Regardless, the “wheels on the bus” must continue to turn, and we have to continue to develop the next generation while keeping the “old guard” satisfied as well. I wish I knew the magic formula and could simply implement it, but each and every individual is unique and requires a slightly different approach to make them feel they are a valued part of the team.
Wayne Rivers says:
Good wisdom, Danny. We’re all searching for that magic elixir!
Don Woodruff says:
I believe that it’s pronounced Kerr (like blur)
So is Dennis your Kevin Durant?
We work on our team subscribing to our core values:
Family
Service
Purpose
Dependability
Enjoyment
When they share these values, worrying about their happiness is diminished as they are already team players and content!
Wayne Rivers says:
Thanks, Don. See below for my mea culpa on Kerr
Barry Thompson says:
All of these Blogs are EXCELLENT! Wayne, it is Steve Kerr, not Carr!
Wayne Rivers says:
Glad you like them, Barry. In NC, we pronounce Kerr as “Car.” I should’ve left my regional idiosyncrasy out of it.

Only 2 things I can think of are taking care of our key people with bonuses, flexibility with work schedule, making sure they have all the tools they need to do their job safely, make their opinion matter as a team member, and owner being available when employees need to talk and giving them responsibility.
Wayne Rivers says:
All good thoughts, Paul. Thank you.
